black men in training

Precept #4 love and help children

Black Men in Training, “B.M.I.T”, is a group whose purpose is to provide services for youth to instill self-awareness, self-reliance, and self-love, as well as, introduce practical life and job skills so the youth have a clear path to a productive and ethical life and can become contributing members of society.

Organized in 1995, and reignited in 2018, B.M.I.T had made some giant strides in 2021. They have adopted The Way to Happiness as part of their curriculum and the TWTH Chapter has assisted them as they expand. This period saw the acquiring of their 501c3 status, the establishment of a Board and securing a location to hold their weekly classes.

At the end of the summer, The Way to Happiness Chapter helped facilitate a field trip to Tacoma, WA, for an adventure-packed day at Wild Waves Theme and Water Park.

During the trip Brother Nolan texted, “It was a blast, and the youth were blown away with this! They absolutely loved it! Thanks a million to the donors and their awesome kindness along with the beautiful friends of B.M.I.T for making this happen!!!!”

B.M.I.T was featured recently in a Fox Channel 12 Oregon newscast about resources needed for Portland area communities most impacted by gun violence.

GO GET YOUR CHILD

Precept #8 DO NOT MURDER

Go Get Your Child Community Violence Prevention Coalition (GGYC) of Greater Portland Oregon has a purpose to educate our communities about the human, public health, and financial consequences of the violence epidemic in our community – in an effort to reduce the violence.

Laurie Palmer is the founder and CEO of GGYC. Her son was a victim of gun and gang violence on January 11, 2015, when he was shot four times. Laurie decided to turn a tragedy into triumph by forming a coalition that gives mothers and victims of gun violence a voice in our community. GGYC assists mothers and fathers in the process of reclaiming their children and assists gang members and victims of gang violence to restart their lives.

Since January 2021, Laurie Palmer and Go Get Your Child have been partnering with The Way to Happiness OregonChapter in a campaign to tackle the recent rise of murders in Portland. The campaign is based on The Way to Happiness Precept #8 “Do Not Murder.”

Beginning in April 2021, yard signs with Precept #8 – “Do Not Murder” have been shared and passed out across Portland and surrounding communities. The #8 Do Not Murder campaign is allowing people to show their support of a better way to live. This campaign has been featured several times on Fox Channel 12 Oregon News and most recently on CNN.
